GLUM

so, if you've read me for any length of time, you would know that i have a teensy bit of liberal in me.

i can also be a naughty envelope-pusher, which often time works both for & against me. i'm obviously not a prude.

so, nobody would be more surprised than me when i state that i was disappointed in my beloved GLEE last night.

the pilot was so original: great music, witty writing, funny jokes & obscure references, and, best of all, characters that you were invested in within 40 minutes.

the premier last night had some of those things. but it was hard to see those things through all of the direct sex references. which were a little rough explaining to the group of 4 to 11 year olds gathered in my basement who had been waiting for this night since may.

i GET that teens think about sex. i am always the first one to laugh out loud at a subtle or well-placed tongue-in-cheek remark or reference. but there was nothing subtle about the references last night--it was all very direct, in-your-face, and, most of the time, totally unnecessary.

i know that this show was developed by the creators of nip/tuck. but they are marketing to a very adult audience for that series. NOT the following they had for glee.

so, my advice? clean it up, people!

don't lose out on your target audience.

END RANT.

and, NO. this is not a sign that the apocalypse is nigh. i really don't want to see any looting or rioting or burning things going on out there--

but it might not hurt to get your financial affairs in order.....just in case.

I agree 100%. I'm WAY liberal and the episode was a little much, even for me. The explosion/car crash ? Really ?? Was that necessary ? I hope this episode was a one-time slip and it gets back to good clean fun cuz it is a great show (based on the pilot). I'm going to keep watching & keep the faith . . .

Had to agree. My kids and I were all set to watch last night. I sent them to bed early after I felt like I had to start editing. Grrrrr!

Assembly=uncomfortable.

I was excited to see they picked one of my fave Salt-n-Pepa songs. NOT so happy about the little jig that went along with it.

Say it isn't so!!! I recorded it to watch today when I could do so uninterrupted. I will be sadly disppointed if they don't clean it up.

Amen. I totally agree. I was shocked and appalled that this episode was so different from the pilot AND that it was so filthy. We were really disappointed. And you better believe that I am emailing them. Thanks for the link.

I am so happy to see that you feel this way, because I had been looking forward to this but was also disappointed. The Push It number was over the top, as well as Celibacy Club. I was embarrassed to have children in the room. LOVED the little Kanye part though. That was the best part of the whole episode.

Is it sad that now I'm waiting on pins and needles to go home and watch me some dirty Glee? My kids aren't in on it, my husband could care less, I guess I'm up for a little dirty, raunchy TV time.....

I love you Mindi! I love reading your blog every day- and I really am not a blog follower to anyone else!
I watched Glee last night because of your rantings and I too, was very disappointed! I kept thinking- is this prime time TV??!!
I will give it one more week to see if it is cleaned up!
Thanks for the honesty- I really do love your blog!

I'm not going to argue that the there was a lot of sex in the episode. What I'm not entirely sure of is what the target audience really is for Glee. I don't know when it's scheduled where you live, but here in San Diego it's on at 9pm. They don't put shows on at 9pm when they're meant for tween audiences. And, generally speaking, since there was drug use in the first episode (and a teacher using said drugs to manipulate a student) I wouldn't exactly be marketing the show to my 11 year old, anyway.

I completely loved the Push It performance. Who doesn't love Salt & Pepa? Nobody, that's who.

Their lip syncing was really bad too! :(

I've been telling my husband for weeks how excited I was for Glee and he comes in the room during the Push It part and says "you've been really excited about THIS?" It brought me right back to when I was a kid and I was trying to watch MTV and my mom would come in the room and I couldn't change the channel fast enough. I don't like to feel that way, so I hope Glee cleans up their act, too.

i concur and i am glad that i am not alone. there were funny parts last night that were reminiscent of the pilot, but if the pilot only had funny parts instead of being a laugh a minute like it was, i wouldn't have tuned in for this episode. let's hope they pull it together. i'm all about humor and innuendo, not blatancy.
more sue sylvester please. less everything else.

I've been excited/wary for this show. Excited because it looks like a fabulous show. Wary because I know Fox. And I know how they work and what type of shows they have on. So I honestly wasn't too shocked when the show turned out like this. Thankfully my kids were in bed. If they hadn't been I would have changed the channel.

You are right. The premise behind this show is fabulous...if they would clean it up it would be so much better.

I was disappointed too. It was too much sex for me as well. Hopefully they get it together and quick.

My kids only watch Disney channel or dvds, so I watched it by myself and totally LOVED IT!

I wish there was a show like this on TV when I was a teenager, because I would have learned so much.

I completely agree. I can't imagine having a room full of tweens with me to watch it. c'mon Glee, clean it up.

Yup. Watching it with my MIL- was really disappointed. Dang.

Dooood. I swear all prime time tv is turning to trash. It's like there is no such thing as any family sitcom anymore... name one! can you? I can't.

Bummer.

I heard that it is getting BAD reviews. BAD.

the dirtiness of it didn't bother me all that much...maybe because I didn't try to watch it with my kids. But just the episode itself was disapointing. I felt like it was all over the place--serious in some spots, original and witty in others, totally slapstick ridiculous in others. I couldn't get a feel for what it was trying to be. I'm glad I'm not alone on feeling like this show has some work to do.

ok, I agree with omgirl. my husband and i watched it and we laughed. a lot. however, i never had plans to make it a family get together. even from the pilot... i could tell they probably were gonna go there. but you gotta admit... that cheer coach - FUNNY!

but still... the lip syncing... SUCKED!
