we ate at the famous kahuku's shrimpmobile and lived to tell about it.

so we were repeatedly told by people in the hawaii-know that we needed to buy shrimp from the shrimp trucks going up the north shore to laie. totally sketchy, but i'm willing to give it a shot if it's as good as they say.

russ and i decided that if we were gonna die of food poisoning, we were going all the way. and so we vowed to find the nastiest truck to patronize. i'm almost positive that we did:

we pulled over to a screeching halt when we saw famous kahuku's shrimpmobile, said a small prayer and then ordered:

the reason why we are smiling is not because it was the best shrimp we'd ever tasted--we are smiling because i couldn't believe we were eating seafood from an rv with a gott cooler in it's front windshield. it was one of those situations that we couldn't make up and i wanted to enjoy it while i could.  cuz i knew this thing would have a short shelf-life with me.

the shrimp WAS very good, but i'm afraid that the surroundings were just too much for my fragile psyche to handle. maybe i'm too suburbanized or too high maintenance but it's hard to eat something that came from an rv that could possibly be condemmed.  when in hawaii, though....

Um, no. I couldn't do it. Never mind the fact that I'm a vegetarian, that's just plain scaaaary. An adventure for sure, but my psyche wouldn't be able to handle it. Ryan would be down for sure.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE those trucks, although Famous isn't my favorite. I like the one in Haleiwa. I do still get grossed out about tearing off the shell, but the atmosphere is so Hawaiian. I love it!

What the crap! I have been working over time to be on your most comments list and nothin'! None of my comments have shown up yet. I did them through Google Reader. Am I doing something wrong or will they show up? Help!

There is no way I could eat something from an "establishment" with such awful grammar.

It is a good thing Megan and Neil weren't with you. One look and taste of all that "hang ten"goodness and Megan wouldn't have been able to see anything else on the whole island she would have just followed the shrimp van from place to place begging for more. She would have been him #1 patient... I mean fan!
p.s. I fixed the chart so you can read it now.

You are one brave girl. Luvpilot and I have vowed to never buy meat or fish from a truck. But that's in AZ. Who knows what we'd do in Hawaii? Actually since he almost died once from salmonella, I do know what we'd do. Glad you lived thru the experience.

I could NEVER do that! You are awesome, always trying new things. Glad the shrimp was good and you didn't get sick. :)

I so miss plate lunches!!!! That has got to be one of the parts of Hawaii. Shrimp, portugese sasage and rice, all of it. If it's from a food truck I AM IN!!!! Call me crazy, but I love the food like your wierd neighboor down the street would make....

Go Kahuku Red Raiders. Everyone in that town is Mormon so I'm sure it was safe, right?!? I personally have never been to that one because, well, that one is a little scary! But props to you for finding that yuckiest one of all ;)!
