24 days of christmas

last year i splurged and got this awesome advent calendar cabinet from ballard designs. (but if i could convince my girl kami to give me hers, i would die a happy woman.)

every day my girls get together to "pull the flap" (in their own words. better than a game show.) and i'm shocked and pleasantly surprised at the anticipation and excitement surrounding this event.

some days there is just a note with a little toy or treat. some days there is an activity to do such as the nativity at tuacahn, or a christmas movie night with treats downstairs. some nights we get really crazy and make christmas cupcakes or hot chocolate with lots of marshmallows and listen to 'the polar express' in the dark with the christmas tree lights on. but whatever it is, it's making memories and establishing traditions.

it seems like something so small and not-so-significant, but i'm so pleased with what a difference it's made in our christmas. if you have the chance to incorporate something like this in your family traditions, i would highly recommend. you won't regret.

That is such a great calendar! My kids are lucky if I remember to get them a cheapy chocolate one before the first weekend in December (I still haven't).

I don't know if I'm commented on your blog before, but I do read it all the time. I have something for you on mine.

I love that kids are so easily impressed sometimes!

We read the EXACT SAME 24 stories as an advent every year. I tried to mix it up thinking everyone was older and bored, but no way, they want it the same again this year.

Love the cute box cabinet thingy!

I need more suggestions of cheap things to put in there. I'm going broke buying six little candies and six tiny toys to put inside.

Please do some info gathering from your mighty reader pool!

I always say that I am going to do these kinds of things when the kids get a little older, but truth is they are a little older and I need to get on the ball!

I have an advent Christmas tree. It has little flaps like that on the base with little wooden toys inside that you hang on the tree. I think when the kids get older, I'll do something like you're doing and put activities and things inside. how fun!
